The intersection of Information Technology and small organizations can be a dangerous one. 'blinks are like flashing amber traffic lights--little warnings that I've picked up on the Web. Let's all help keep these intersections accident-free.

Take a second look at the posting below, the one titled, "The quick brown fox..." I dictated that sentence on my cell phone using a web 2.0 service called "Jott." I called Jott, told it to post to this blog, B.L.I.N.K.S., and dictated the posting. (Yes, I could have been more original.) Jott converted the speech to text and, using a web service and my credentials, posted it to my blog. It also emailed a copy to me and would text it to my cell phone if I wanted to enable Sprint's expensive texting (SMS) service for $15.99 per month. Jott is a public beta right now and it's not perfect, but it is a simple and powerful implementation of speech-to-text and you ought to give it a try. 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

We have noticed that Logitech Keyboards are prone to losing their letters, particularly along the lower rows, after a couple of years. Interestingly, the letters that spell "Logitech" are mostly in the middle row. Given that, the company name would be "Logite k." Keyboards are pretty cheap, so it may be better to consider buying another brand. For example, I'm using a five year old Compaq branded keyboard made in China and it looks almost new, with no erosion of the letters imprinted on the keys. 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +
Daylight Savings Time Problems
Remember Y2K, when everyone was worried that computer clocks would be thrown off and commerce would come to a crashing halt when the new century began on January 1st? Well, guess what? A similar scenario has shaped up because Congress switched us to Daylight Saving Time two weeks earlier than before. Here's what we have to say about the situation in our Tips n Tricks section: "Due to daylight savings time changes, Microsoft Corp. warns users of its calendar appointments may be off by an hour. The U.S. Energy Policy extended Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the U.S. by approximately four weeks. As a result, beginning in 2007, DST will start three weeks earlier on March 11, 2007, and end one week later on November 4, 2007, resulting in a new DST period that is four weeks longer than previously observed. MS Outlook calendar users might see problems if they do not get the patch." 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

New version of Windows & Office
Microsoft announced that it will delay final release of its new operating system, Windows Vista, and its new version of Microsoft Office, until January 2007. This means that any computers purchased at that time will come pre-loaded with the new Operating System (OS). You may not want the new OS, so be sure to specify that you want your new systems loaded with Windows XP instead of Vista. I.T. managers typically prefer to standardize on a single version. Also, the adoption rate for new versions of Windows is actually very slow. So...no need to rush. Give the new OS time to mature a bit and plan your upgrade for later in 2007, or 2008. (Of course, that will mean resisting the billion-dollar marketing juggernaut for the new version, but you can do that, right?) 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +
If your notebook computer is lost or stolen, wouldn't it be great if you had installed "Phone Home" software from Brigadoon? This software will secretly check in with the software company once a day whenever your IP address changes. If your computer is lost or stolen, the next time it goes online, it will do the same and that gives you a pretty good chance of finding, and recovering, it. 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +
SpyWare Prevention Tool (Soon)
Noted spyware researcher Ben Edelman has joined the advisory board of Site Advisor, a new and well-thought-out tool to help you be much smarter in avoiding spyware. It's not quite ready for general use, but after only a few minutes of beta-testing, I found Site Advisor to be an excellent tool. Here's how it works: You download a plug-in for either Internet Explorer or Firefox. Thereafter, whenever you do a Google or Yahoo search, you'll see Site Advisor icons in the search results indicating the relative danger (or safety) of the site. If you directly visit a site, you'll see the Site Advisor rating in the staus bar of your browser (in Firefox, at the lower right corner). The ratings are red, yellow and green. No need for explanation there! You will be surprised at some of the sites that get a red (danger) mark. Site Advisor uses robots to crawl the net and algorithms to test the sites. There's much more technical info here. 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

We have been experiencing an e-mail virus storm, mainly with variants of the "W32.sober.X@mm" worm since November 19. How does a storm occur? It all has to do with address books. If one person triggers the worm, it is sent to everyone in the victim's address book, including any groups, and it will generally keep sending repeatedly until the breach is repaired. You may be in that address book multiple times, so you get many copies. And, if anyone else from the first address book is infected, the process starts anew, and you may get a bazillion more emails since you are probably in many address books that branch from the original. It's a kind of "who you know" networking thing. 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +
Even though Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the "default" web browser for most people (75 percent as of 9/2005), there are other, much better browsers available. In December 2004, FireFox was released and quickly gained market share. It's now at 18 percent. Opera has been around since 1995, but the crazy Norwegians that developed it expected us to pay for it! Imagine that! As a result, Opera has garnered a microscopic 1 percent share. But now they have seen the light and are distributing Opera v8.5 for free with no annoying ads or other clutter. (Watch their market share go up now.) All of this history is merely edification. Here's the main message: TRY Opera. It has features that other browsers don't, including a cool thing called "sessions" which allows you to open up and login to several web sites all at once. 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +
Got VoIP? Listen up!
The hackers are coming to voice-over-IP phone services. If you have taken advantage of the cost savings of VoIP by subscribing to Packet8, Vonage, SunRocket or similar services, you need to be aware that Symantec is predicting that hackers are discovering some potentially worrisome opportunities in VoIP. When your phone conversations go across the Internet, they become susceptible to all sorts of exploits that have long since been driven out of the 130-year-old analog phone network. Like what? How about caller ID spoofing? You see that a call appears to be coming from your bank or broker...but it's not. Or "audio spam", wherein your voice mailbox gets loaded with, well, commercials. What can you do? Not much right now other than being aware. 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +
Windows XP's Hidden Applications
This is very "geeky" and potentially meaningless to all but a few who could have a bit of fun with the programs listed below. To run any of these apps go to Start > Run and type the executable name (ie charmap). WINDOWS XP HIDDEN APPS: ===================================== 1) Character Map = charmap.exe (very useful for finding unusual characters) 2) Disk Cleanup = cleanmgr.exe 3) Clipboard Viewer = clipbrd.exe (views contents of Windows clipboard) 4) Dr Watson = drwtsn32.exe (Troubleshooting tool) 5) DirectX diagnosis = dxdiag.exe (Diagnose & test DirectX, video & sound cards) 6) Private character editor = eudcedit.exe (allows creation or modification of characters) 7) IExpress Wizard = iexpress.exe (Create self-extracting / self-installing package) 8) Microsoft Synchronization Manager = mobsync.exe (appears to allow synchronization of files on the network for when working offline. Apparently undocumented). 9) Windows Media Player 5.1 = mplay32.exe (Retro version of Media Player, very basic). 10) ODBC Data Source Administrator = odbcad32.exe (something to do with databases) 11) Object Packager = packager.exe (to do with packaging objects for insertion in files, appears to have comprehensive help files). 12) System Monitor = perfmon.exe (very useful, highly configurable tool, tells you everything you ever wanted to know about any aspect of PC performance, for uber-geeks only ) 13) Program Manager = progman.exe (Legacy Windows 3.x desktop shell). 14) Remote Access phone book = rasphone.exe (documentation is virtually non-existant). 15) Registry Editor = regedt32.exe [also regedit.exe] (for hacking the Windows Registry). 16) Network shared folder wizard = shrpubw.exe (creates shared folders on network). 17) File signature verification tool = sigverif.exe 18) Volume Contro = sndvol32.exe (I’ve included this for those people that lose it from the System Notification area). 19) System Configuration Editor = sysedit.exe (modify System.ini & Win.ini just like in Win98! ). 20) Syskey = syskey.exe (Secures XP Account database – use with care, it’s virtually undocumented but it appears to encrypt all passwords, I’m not sure of the full implications). 21) Microsoft Telnet Client = telnet.exe 22) Driver Verifier Manager = verifier.exe (seems to be a utility for monitoring the actions of drivers, might be useful for people having driver problems. Undocumented). 23) Windows for Workgroups Chat = winchat.exe (appears to be an old NT utility to allow chat sessions over a LAN, help files available). 0 Comments(s): Click to post your comment. + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - +

Country Joe and the "Phish"
And now, the con of "phishing" gets even trickier: "eBay is fighting to repair a software glitch that opens the door to phishing attacks using one of its own legitimate URLs." "The online auction giant is working on a fix for the problem, and it hopes to distribute that fix among its Web pages in the next several days, a company representative said on Friday. The problem, described by the company as a "software bug," could be exploited by criminals to create an actual eBay link that redirects customers to a malicious site, the representative said." This is a handy list of TCP and UDP ports in use -- 1 thru 65536. These are the ports that are reserved for use by all sorts of software. If you have a firewall, and you should, it will close most of them and allow you to open only the ports necessary for you to do whatever it is you do. (Of course, the malefactors that scan millions of computers looking for open ports don't care about this list too awfully much.)
